Disciplinary CodeLearner Code of Conduct:
At Laerskool Lydenburg it is our aim to create an environment where every learner will be content. Here he / she has to use every opportunity to develop uniformly. Every learner's academic progress remains a priority. At this school, we uphold high values and norms. We strive towards humanity.
The code of conduct is grounded on the following:

- Discipline and order is the cornerstone of a successful society.
- Discipline must be the highest priority.
- Implementation of sanctions takes place according to the LSL code of conduct and with the full co - operation and knowledge of the parents.
- The parental home and school serve the same purpose - to educate the child, to ensure that he / she will reach proper adulthood.
- Mutual respect and esteem between all parties are essential and a culture of tolerance is important.
- The LSL code of conduct is subject to the Constitution of South Africa 1996 (Act No. 108 of 1996) and the SA School's Act of 1996 (Act No. 84 of 1996).
- The school strives towards a disciplined environment.
- The best discipline is self-discipline and the co-operation of every learner, parent and teacher is kindly requested.
- Every learner is expected to maintain a high moral and ethical standard of conduct, behaviour or and language use.
The code of conduct has been compiled according to instructions in:
- The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa 1996
- South African Schools Act of 2006
- Guidelines for a Code of Conduct for Learners
NOTHING WILL EXEMPT A LEARNER TO COMPLY WITH THE SCHOOL CODE OF CONDUCT AND SCHOOL RULES.
Disciplinary policy:
- A distinction is made between 4 categories of offences. The different categories are explained below:
- A points system is implemented according to which a certain number of points are awarded to each category. For category 4 transgressions, which are extremely serious transgressions, 10 points are allocated, while category 1 transgressions justify only 1 point.
Category 1 (1 point)
This category is aimed at delivering good academic performance. It is also there to promote a neat appearance for a good self-image, pride and loyalty to the institution and self-discipline.
- Clothing and neatness not according to the LSL uniform policy.
- Copying of homework from friends / borrowing books / homework not written in diary / dereliction of duty.
- Being late after changing classes or after breaks.
- Eating / drinking in class / chewing gum on school grounds or at any sporting events.
Category 2 (2 points)
These are “less serious” transgressions, where the learner's misconduct harms himself and others in the school and the playground with regard to orderliness and thoughtfulness.
- Bad manners / incessant chatter.
- Homework not done / books not at school / books / textbooks lost. Textbooks and scripts that are lost or damaged must be replaced at the learner's expense).
- Dishonesty / Telling lies.
- Diary not at school.
Category 3 (3 points)
This category is aimed at general behaviours that may impede meaningful teaching. This includes learner's general behaviour towards fellow learners and staff.
- Indoctrination / the negative influence of peers.
- Victimization / harassment / fighting / bullying - verbal or physical.
- Graffiti - writing / drawing on any furniture, buildings or school property.
- To stay away from school without a valid reason / doctor's note.
- Any action which has a negative reflection on the school / image of the school at any school event.
- If cellphone is visible and / or used during school hours, the phone is also confiscated and a fine of R50.00 must be paid to get it back.
- Contemptuous / disrespectful behaviour towards staff / undermining authority.
- Coloured hair, not even to control lice. No weird hairstyles.
- Use of unacceptable language / swearing.
Category 4 (10 points)
These more 'serious' transgressions include dangerous, immoral and serious antisocial behaviour in learners.
- Lost Diary.
- Smoking / being in the presence of smokers / possession of cigarettes.
- Theft / possession of stolen articles.
- Physical force / Assault.
- In possession of / use of drugs.
- Possession/ use / supply of alcohol.
- Possession and distribution of pornographic or obscene material - any media.
- Serious vandalism / destruction to property.
- Indecent sexual behaviour / obscenity.
- Cheating during exams / test.
- Racism / hate speech.
- Possession or use of dangerous weapons (sharp objects, knives, needles, etc.)
- Disregard of disciplinary action or punishment imposed / missing detention without a valid reason.
- Complicity in the commission of any of the above transgressions.
- The above mentioned transgressions will be punished during school trips, activities and outside school hours if the learner is in uniform and acts as an ambassador for the school.
Action in respect to violation
Category 1,2 and 3
Juniors
- Lost diaries should immediately be replaced at R50
- Educator records violation in disciplinary book / diary
- After 5 points, parents receive a notification letter from Head of Department
- After 10 points, parents receive a detention letter and sms from the Head of Department
Seniors
- Lost diaries should immediately be replaced at R50
- Educator records violation in disciplinary book / diary
- After 10 points, parents receive a detention letter and sms from the Head of Department
Category 4
- Parents will immediately notified, telephonically
- Immediate detention as arranged with parents
- Disciplinary hearing if needed
Punishment measures
Detention
- If a learner has 10 or more marks, the parent / guardian will receive a detention letter and SMS indicating the detention date and time.
- Detention takes place on Friday afternoons, in the media center, as arranged in advance.
- Detention takes place from directly after school until 15:30
- No student will be excused ahead of time.
- If a learner is unable to attend the detention, the parent / guardian must notify the school in writing.
- In such a case, the student will sit detention in the following week.
- Parents of learners who stay away from the detention without apology will be contacted and the learner with his / her parents will be involved in a disciplinary hearing as determined by the Management of the school.
- On Friday afternoons the learners will be provided with work.
- Points fall away from the date the detention was granted. For example, if the detention was granted on 27/2, transgressions before 27/2 will be dropped. Violations thereafter again add up points as per usual.

- ONLY black ‘2nd skin shirts’ may be worn underneath complete tracksuit and LSL shirt
- Sport tekkies and school socks or official LSL sport socks – no other socks allowed
- Plain maroon scarf and gloves – NO beanies

- Maroon school dress with short maroon socks or thick, black stockings (not see through) and black school shoes
- School jersey / tracksuit top
- Official school tracksuit with LSL shirt

- Sport tekkies and maroon socks or official LSL sport socks – no other socks allowed
- Plain maroon scarf and gloves – NO beanies

- Earrings: Only small silver/gold/diamond buttons - no coloured stones.

- NO patterns may be cut in the hair

- No braiding of hair
- Hair touching the collar must be tied back even if it is braided
- No fringe or pieces of hair may hang in the eyes. It must be pinned back.
- NO gel, mousse or any other hair products may be used
- Long hair should be neatly tied back
- Only maroon/yellow/royal blue (as on the LSL shirt) materials are allowed

- Provincial colours, received in the current year in any sport offered by the school
- Shirt or jacket can be worn with a jean and tekkies otherwise the complete tracksuit
